Your Quick Beginner’s Guide to Axe Throwing

Axe throwing is one of the fastest growing sports today. If you’re new to axe throwing, you may be interested in learning some key tips and tricks so that you can improve your skills. Below you’ll find your quick beginner’s guide to axe throwing so you can throw with total confidence and hit the target every time!

Your Grip Is Crucial

An inconsistent grip directly impacts your throw, as it makes it much harder to control the tilt, wobble, and spin speed of the axe. Most throwers use a lighter grip and hold the handle towards the middle/end of the palm. Lighter grips are more forgiving, and you’ll find that the release feels effortless.

Choose a Small Point on The Target

While the idea of axe throwing is to hit the target, it’s best to choose a small area, ideally the center, and then aim for that spot. This way, you can throw the axe directly towards this point instead of aiming without a solid destination in mind.

Keep Your Arms and Shoulders Relaxed

Upper body tension and axe throwing aren’t a good mix! When positioning the axe, make sure your arms and shoulders are relaxed. Don’t tense up or shrug before starting your throw, as this will skew the direction of the axe.

Control Your Power and Follow Through

Power is needed to get the axe to the target, but throwing too hard can be problematic. Hard throws impact precision. Light to medium strength is best for minimizing drops and getting the axe to land exactly where you want it.

After releasing the axe, be sure to fully continue the forward motion. Letting go too early causes a reduction in power and will give the axe too much spin and/or wobble.
